TOKYO, Japan - September 12, 2024ーENEOS Corporation has launched an initiative to build a digital twin infrastructure for refineries that will improve the efficiency of engineering operations at refineries by integrating diverse, siloed data into a single virtural space, utilizing Cognite's data platform Cognite Data Fusion®︎.

The industry is struggling with aging facilities and workforce. As the generation of engineers changes, the institutional knowledge and various data necessary to run legacy equipment are often lost in individual electronic files or paper documents. Engineers working in refineries are faced with the problem that it takes an enormous amount of time to collect the information needed for evaluation and analysis.

This recently launched initiative will enable the instantaneous acquisition of systematically organized information, contributing to increased engineer productivity, improved maintenance planning accuracy, and improved construction quality.

Cognite Data Fusion®︎ will be rolled out to four refineries (Sendai, Kawasaki, Sakai, and Mizushima) in the second half of FY2024, and is expected to be in operation at all ENEOS refineries by FY2026.

In the future, the goal is to help reduce refinery troubles and pass on engineering skills to engineers, while achieving such goals as business process automation for engineering work support(※1) using the accumulated data and AI functions. Both companies will continue to maintain an efficient and stable energy supply through this initiative.

(※1)Obtaining various data (equipment drawings, piping drawings, maintenance history, operating history, field photographs, etc.) is necessary for evaluating the reliability of refinery facilities and planning efficient operations, and proposing tasks under certain conditions, etc.

Fumitaka Terashima, General Manager, Technical Planning Department, ENEOS said,
“The ENEOS Group's long-term vision is to take on the challenge of achieving both a stable supply of energy and materials and help create a carbon-neutral society. To realize this vision, we have positioned the further acceleration of digital transformation (DX) to establish a solid foundation for earnings and realize energy transition goals as key measures in the digital strategy of the Third Mid-Term Management Plan.

In the manufacturing sector, we have been considering a concierge-like solution for engineers that can improve operational efficiency through centralized management of data necessary for seamless operations and improve reliability by preventing refinery problems before they occur. We recognize that Cognite Data Fusion®️ is a solution that can realize these goals, and we expect that it will contribute to further improvement of operational efficiency and reliability through advanced facility management, technology, and process studies by utilizing the data it captures."

Ryoichi Egawa, President, Cognite Japan, said,
”We are honored to introduce and deploy Cognite Data Fusion® at ENEOS refineries. Cognite provides an industrial DataOps platform that integrates siloed data through AI-powered solutions. The flexibility of data integration and contextualization, which are key strengths of Cognite Data Fusion®, enable rapid deployment across all refineries. We are very pleased that adopting Cognite Data Fusion® will facilitate the construction of a digital twin at ENEOS and contribute to enhancing operational efficiency and sophistication through data utilization. Cognite remains committed to supporting digital transformation and improving corporate activities by providing robust data infrastructure."
