Full-scale start of streamlining manufacturing operations through centralization of plant data
TOKYO, Japan - November 27, 2024 - Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. and Cognite announced that they have completed the implementation of Cognite Data Fusion®︎, the leading Data and AI platform, at four manufacturing sites (Hokkaido Refinery, Chiba Complex, Aichi Complex, and Tokuyama Complex) that manufacture petroleum refining and chemical products. Idemitsu Kosan will use Cognite Data Fusion®︎ to centrally manage data and domain knowledge accumulated at each refinery and complex on equipment operation and maintenance operations, thereby reducing the time required for information collection and analysis and enhancing the sophistication of decision-making, including forecasting and situational awareness(a mechanism to notice).
Cognite Data Fusion®︎ is an AI-powered data management platform that enables the consolidation and contextualization of various plant data. Idemitsu Kosan uses Cognite Data Fusion®︎ to centrally manage the wide variety of data at its four manufacturing sites on an integrated database, including P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), repair history, operating data, equipment drawings, and near-miss and accident information.
Previously, maintenance engineers had to collect a variety of data individually when planning equipment operation and maintenance work. the introduction of Cognite Data Fusion®︎, they can now extract the necessary data instantly. Currently, approximately 10,000 P&IDs have been consolidated, and more than 6 million data items, including repair history, operating data, and equipment drawings, can be instantly checked. In the future, approximately 3,000 employees are expected to use Cognite Data Fusion®︎.
Introduction Briefing Session at Idemitsu
Nobuyoshi Hojo, General Manager, Production Engineering Center, Idemitsu Kosan said, “Idemitsu Kosan has set forth “Responsible Transformer” in its 2030 Vision. It is promoting structural reform of its core businesses and transformation of its business portfolio. The Center, which is responsible for providing technical support to refineries and complexes, one of our core businesses, has decided to reduce lead time in information gathering and analysis as part of its structural reforms and has been introducing Cognite Data Fusion®︎ since this fiscal year. We believe that the introduction of Cognite Data Fusion®︎ at the four manufacturing sites will provide a foundation for sharing knowledge and ideas across site boundaries and for recognizing potential risks, thereby contributing to improved productivity and customer value, as well as to the creation of a more rewarding workplace.”
Toshifumi Ogasawara, Manager, Machinery Section, Hokkaido Refinery, Idemitsu Kosan said, ”Plant maintenance planning requires the collection of drawings, operating data, and past maintenance history. Until now, we had to rely on our personal experience and skills to search multiple systems to find the data, which was time-consuming, but with Cognite Data Fusion®︎, the desired data can be accessed by simply clicking on the P&ID, so even young facility engineers can use it intuitively, We have seen an improvement in work efficiency in the field.”
Ryoichi Egawa, President, Cognite Japan said, "We are very pleased that Idemitsu Kosan has completed the implementation of Cognite Data Fusion®︎at its four manufacturing sites, and we will continue to contribute to Idemitsu Kosan's DX promotion and operation sophistication by further leveraging the strength of Cognite Data Fusion®︎, which can contextualize any data from IT, OT, and ET data using AI. We will continue contributing to Idemitsu Kosan's digital transformation and operational enhancement."
